Introduction:

Leaving the military is a significant life transition that can be both exhilarating and daunting. As I reflect on my own journey, I am reminded of the unexpected twists and turns that led me from serving as a White House paramedic to facing a medical audit and ultimately being medically retired. The last few months of my military career were filled with panic and uncertainty as I contemplated what the future held for me and my family. In this blog post, I will share my experiences, struggles, and the valuable lessons I learned during the transition to civilian life.

The Unexpected Road:

When I sustained a foot injury while serving my second president at the White House, I found myself facing the reality of being medically audited. Combined with the lingering effects of a previous neck injury sustained during a helicopter incident, it became clear that I would no longer be able to continue serving my country. This abrupt change of plans left me grappling with a mix of emotions. I had not anticipated leaving the military and had envisioned a long and successful career ahead of me. The thought of starting over in the civilian sector was both intimidating and uncertain.

Supportive Sacrifices:

As I navigated this uncertain path, I turned to my wife, who had been my unwavering support throughout my military journey. Together, we faced the decision of where to relocate our family. While the allure of high-level job offers in prestigious agencies tempted me, I realized that it was time to prioritize my wife's happiness and our desire to be closer to our family in Colorado. With her support and understanding, I made the sacrifice of turning down those enticing opportunities and began my search for a new career path in the civilian sector.

Finding Purpose in the Civilian Sector:

Through my extensive network in EMS, I was fortunate to secure a position as a paramedic at Platte Valley Ambulance Service in Commerce City, Colorado. Leveraging my military leadership skills, I quickly rose through the ranks, eventually becoming a Battalion Chief. However, my journey didn't stop there. A year later, I made the difficult decision to leave Platte Valley and join Thompson Valley EMS as an EMS Captain. It was a challenging move, but it provided me with opportunities for growth and the chance to be part of specialized programs that aligned with my passions.

Navigating the Differences:

Transitioning from the military to the civilian sector presented its fair share of challenges. The pace of operations, especially compared to my time at the White House, was notably different. My direct professionalism and efficiency, honed during my military service, sometimes came across as too intense or even brown-nosing. It was a learning process to adapt to the civilian work culture and find the right balance between my military background and the expectations of the civilian world.

Evaluating and Realigning:

Despite finding success in my civilian role, I couldn't shake the feeling of unfulfillment and the sense that I was not reaching my full potential. After facing numerous challenges and making mistakes along the way, I made the difficult decision to resign from my position. I took a step back to evaluate my first year and a half in the civilian sector, reflecting on what truly brought me fulfillment and how I could align my career with my passions and abilities.

Conclusion:

The transition from military to civilian life is a unique and often challenging journey. It is a process of self-discovery, adaptation, and resilience. While the road may not always be smooth, it is through these challenges that we learn and grow. As I continue to navigate this new chapter, I am committed to finding fulfillment and reaching my full potential. I am grateful for the lessons learned, the sacrifices made, and the unwavering support of my loved ones. And I am excited for the next chapter of my journey, as I embrace new opportunities and continue to carve my own path towards a fulfilling and purpose-driven life.
