Starting your own business or doing your own thing is a formidable challenge that many dream about but few dare to actually undertake. For me, the transition from military life, with its structured routine and camaraderie, to the uncertain world of entrepreneurship was not just a career move but a profound life change. This journey began after I left the military unexpectedly due to medical retirement and concluded with the realization of a long-held but dormant dream: starting my own business.
The Backstory: A Dormant LLC and a Pile of Doubts
Years ago, I took the step of founding an LLC, envisioning it as a launchpad for entrepreneurial ventures. However, it largely remained dormant, serving more as a theoretical safety net than an active business. My hesitancy to fully engage with the venture was fueled by a mixture of apprehension and practicality. Having a family to support and the stable income from my post-military career positions made the uncertainties of entrepreneurship appear daunting.
The security of a regular paycheck outweighed the allure of business opportunities, despite frequent bouts of inspiration from motivational speakers and a persistent internal voice that assured me of my capabilities. Encouragement to pursue greater achievements was plentiful, but the dual pressures of fear and familial responsibility consistently anchored me in place, preventing me from taking the leap into the uncertain waters of full-time entrepreneurship.
A Push from Unexpected Places
The pivotal moment in my journey arrived unexpectedly through the unwavering support of my biggest advocate—my wife. She, more than anyone else, encouraged me to venture down the challenging path of entrepreneurship, despite my apprehensions about financial insecurity. Her faith in my abilities was absolute and unyielding. After my military service, I had secured reputable positions such as Battalion Chief and EMS Captain, roles in which leadership and responsibility were paramount. In these positions, I found fulfillment in guiding and safeguarding others.
Yet, despite these successes, there lingered a persistent internal conflict. Deep down, I harbored a sense of being destined for a different sphere of influence, one that could extend beyond the confines of my current roles. This internal drive, coupled with my wife’s encouragement, began to shift my perspective, gently steering me towards embracing the risks associated with my entrepreneurial aspirations.

Embracing the Fear and Making the Leap
About a month ago, I reached a significant turning point: I decided to quit my job. Bolstered by my wife's encouragement and driven by a deep-seated desire to achieve more, I revived my previously inactive LLC. I began navigating the complex maze of regulatory requirements, utilizing resources like LegalZoom and extensive online research to guide me through the process. Initially, the prospect of tackling such administrative tasks seemed daunting, yet as I dived into the work, I found it to be surprisingly manageable.
This discovery was empowering, and each step forward reinforced my confidence. The journey of reactivating my LLC transformed from a daunting task into an achievable mission, helping me to realize that the obstacles I feared were not as insurmountable as I had imagined. This experience was not just about taking a leap into entrepreneurship but about embracing the fear that accompanied it and converting that fear into a driving force for personal and professional growth.

Carving Out a Niche: Consulting with a Purpose
The start of my consulting firm was deeply rooted in my unique experiences and a burgeoning desire to influence organizations on a broader scale. My previous roles, while fulfilling, primarily focused on aiding individuals or small teams. In contrast, consulting offered a broader stage—a chance to profoundly influence the strategies and operations of entire companies. I envisioned my company as a specialized consultancy that leverages my extensive background in emergency medical services and leadership.
This blend of expertise allowed me to craft a unique suite of services aimed at guiding organizations not only toward operational success but also towards significant enhancements in safety protocols. By focusing on these critical areas, I aimed to carve out a niche that not only utilized my strengths but also fulfilled my desire to make a meaningful impact on a larger canvas, helping organizations navigate complex challenges with strategic precision and foresight.
Early Successes and International Opportunities
Initial doubts about securing clients were quickly dispelled. Within days of starting, I landed a contract to evaluate and revise SOPs and emergency response plans for large venues. This task, though seemingly mundane, was deeply satisfying as it played a crucial role in safeguarding lives and improving operational policies.
Shortly after, I received an unexpected call that led to an international assignment. As I write this blog from Switzerland, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the swift onset of opportunities that have come my way, validating my decision to embark on this venture.

The Road Ahead: Uncertainty and Opportunity
Despite experiencing some early success, I am fully aware that the future of my consulting business is not set in stone. The road ahead is fraught with uncertainties, and the potential for failure is a real possibility. However, I view each step of this journey as a valuable learning opportunity. Success or failure, the experiences I gather will be instrumental in my personal and professional development.
Disclaimer: I am open to employment with a company; I remain proactive and optimistic, keeping an open mind to forming partnerships and collaborations that resonate with my core values and the broader impact I aim to achieve. By aligning with individuals and organizations that share similar goals, I can enhance my reach and effectiveness. This approach not only broadens my network but also deepens the impact of my work, allowing me to contribute meaningfully while navigating the unpredictable landscape of entrepreneurship.
Final Thoughts
Starting your own business, especially after a structured military career, is a leap into the unknown. It requires confronting fears, embracing risks, and steadfastly pursuing your vision. For those contemplating this path, remember that support can come from the most unexpected places and that sometimes, the biggest hurdle is your own doubt. Embrace the challenge, and you might just find yourself reflecting on a journey you never thought possible.
